UPDATE: Oct-2017, reports that this tool is not compatible with recent updated version Windows 10 (that includes OneDrive by default). Awaiting updated tool to be published by Microsoft.
Invalid characters in filenames can prevent a sync completing; see https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2933738
There is a Microsoft tool which will attempt to fix (rename) the invalid filenames. Please download and extract (unZip) the attached tool (see below)
Double-click the file to run it. Here's a step-by-step guide of what to expect:
1 of 7: Select "Local folder", and click Next
2 of 7: Browse to the location of the folder where the files are that you want to verify or fix, and click Next
3 of 7: Ensure that all other programs are closed which might be viewing or accessing the files (click Yes, then Next)
4 of 7: Wait whist the files are scanned (this could take a long time - is some cases more than an hour)
5 of 7: Wait whist the files are renamed (this could take a long time - is some case more than an hour)
6 of 7: Complete! Before you click Close, check step 7...
7 of 7: Click "View detailed information" (in step 6) to get a report on the files affected. Finally, click Next and Close.
