Mobile Equipment Identifier (IMEI)
The IMEI enables Network Operators to identify individual mobile phones accessing their networks.
TÜV SÜD BABT (https://www.tuvsud.com/en-gb/) allocates IMEI for incorporation in the GSM Association's IMEI database. This database is used to populate the CEIR (Central Equipment Identity Register); see https://www.gsma.com/solutions-and-impact/industry-services/imei-database/
Dial *#06# to view a phone IMEI ID, or for a router look in the system status area.
How 15 digit IMEI numbers are formatted:
NN | XXXXXX | ZZZZZZ | A |
1st 2 digits are the reporting BODY, such as 35 = TÜV SÜD BABT | Next 6 digits are the device TYPE | Unique SERIAL NUMBER allocated by the manufacturer | PARITY number (generated by manufacturer) |
Combined 8 digits known as TAC code | Manufacturer generated |
IMEI numbers are registered with TÜV SÜD BABT who point out:
"Network Operators and Government Regulators access the data stored in the IMEI database. We have found many instances where the information on web sites claiming to provide IMEI allocation data is wrong. Currently there is no publicly available website that provides accurate up-to-date IMEI allocation details."
