Roaming: How to force phones to roam

Modified on Sun, 8 Sep at 7:44 PM

Quick fix list for roaming:

  • Roaming needs to be enabled on your account BEFORE YOUR TRAVEL
  • Your Spend Cap needs to be set BEFROE YOUR TRAVEL for sufficient credit for the daily charges
  • Most phones can only use data on ONE SIM AT A TIME, if you have 2 SIMs (such as an eSIM and a physical SIM)
    • Ensure your phone is set to use your primary sim for mobile data
  • Roaming needs to be enabled on the phone
  • You may need to manually force the phone to try joining a local network (which will fail), then revert to "auto" network
  • You may need to read and apply a settings message sent to your phone to enable roaming on the specific zone
  • You may need to completely power off the phone, then turn on

Apple devices (iPhone)

The following tips are direct from Apple's own support pages.

See https://support.apple.com/en-gb/109037 & https://support.apple.com/en-gb/109324 & https://support.apple.com/en-gb/109317

Settings > General > Date & Time > Set Automatically: ON

Tap the airplane icon to set Airplane Mode: ON [wait 60 seconds] Set Airplane Mode: OFF

Settings > Mobile Data | [Tap appropriate SIM if dual SIM] > Mobile Data: ON > Mobile Data Options > Data Roaming: ON

Settings > General > About. Follow the onscreen instructions to install your network provider update (if any).

Go to SMS messages and read/accept network message (if any)

Power phone OFF then turn ON

If still experiencing issues then you may have a Spend Cap that needs removing; this can only be modified Mon-Fri 09:00-17:00 UK time, and can take a couple of hours to take effect; contact us to get this checked.

  • Wait for phone to find list of networks, and tap any network (this will likely fail)
  • Repeat the above steps, but this time set "Select automatically: ON"
